Free Lecture on Jung and Swedenborg, Tuesday June 7, 2005 7:30 PM - The Swedenborg Society at Harvard, in cooperation with the Cambridge
Society of the New Jerusalem, presents the annual Wilfred Gould Rice
Lecture on Psychology and Religion. The Rice lecture is presented this year
by Eugene Taylor, PhD, Executive Faculy, Saybrook Institute, Lecturer on
Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, and founder and director of the
Cambridge Institute of Psychology and Religion. The title of this year's
lecture is "Jung and Swedenborg." Taylor notes: "While Jung is generally
remembered as a mere acolyte of Freud, recent historical scholarship
suggests that, in reality, he was a Twentieth century exponent of the
symbolic hypothesis, but in the tradition of the late 19th century
psychologies of transcendence. This allies him more with the
psycho-spiritual lineage of William James, FWH Myers, and Theodore
Flournoy, while still acknowledging his debt to Freud in the six years they
were associated with one another. Curiously, Jung read Swedenborg both
before and after his encounter with Freudian psychoanalysis, but not during
that period. Who Swedenborg was and the kind of psychology he represented
partly suggests some reasons for this trend."
